Movies on the Green kicks off with 'Easy Rider'

By Kristin Jirovsky·July 4, 2005

After a brief absence of lawn chairs and blankets when Jazz in June ended, they will once again adorn the area of campus near the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery lawn as people come to watch Jensen's Cinema 16 Collection Movies on the Green.

Movies on the Green is a summer series of films organized by the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and the University Program Council.

The free screenings will be shown on the grass on the north side of Kimball Recital Hall, 12th and R streets.

“There is usually a good turnout,” said Sam McCoy, employee at the Ross. “It usually depends on the movie.”

The movies are chosen from the Ross archives by Danny Ladely, director of the Ross..

This year’s films are aimed more at an adult audience McCoy said. Movies are selected to appeal to the audience’s taste and to bring in different crowds.

This year's schedule of movies is:

n July 7 - “Easy Rider”

n July 14 - “The Blue Lagoon”

n July 21 - “A Clockwork Orange”

n July 28 - “The Revenge of Frankenstein”

n August 4 - “The Heartbreak Kid” and

n August 11 - “American Graffiti”

“It’s always a good atmosphere,” said Kevin Mattern, a freshman undeclared major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and previous Movies on the Green attendee.

“It’s always nice and relaxing,” he said.

Mattern said he has gone to past Movies on the Green to spend time with his friends and watch good movies.

Movies on the Green will begin at dusk, around 9 p.m., Thursday with “Easy Rider” directed by Dennis Hopper and starring Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson.
